Two burglary suspects being pursued by police caused a lockdown at Stansbury Elementary School last Thursday morning.
A Tooele County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a call of two males looking through a purse behind Kraver’s restaurant in Stansbury Park around 9:30 a.m. When the deputy arrived at the scene, the two suspects fled in opposite directions on foot.
The deputy chased after one of the suspects on foot and was able to arrest him in the area of the elementary school. Tooele County Sheriff Paul Wimmer said his office alerts schools if there is police activity in the area and the school makes the decision whether to go into lockdown.
The school remained in lockdown for approximately an hour as a result of the arrest taking place near the school. Wimmer said he didn’t believe the burglary suspects represented a threat to the school or its students.
The second suspect in the case was later arrested and transported to the Tooele County Detention Center.
Brody Kuipers, 18, of Stansbury Park and Steffen England, 18, of Erda, were arrested in connection to the suspected burglary and could face charges of evading, burglary and possession of stolen goods.
Both Kuipers and England had outstanding warrants for their arrest in relation to previous criminal activity, including vehicle burglary, according to the sheriff’s department.
