Transcript earns awards at SPJ banquet

Reporters and photographers from the Tooele Transcript Bulletin won a number of awards across its spectrum of coverage at the Society of Professional Journalists’ Utah Headliner’s 2015 awards banquet.

The Transcript Bulletin competed in the Division B category for newspapers with a circulation of 50,000 or less.

Reporter Emma Penrod won first place for Minority Issues Reporting for her piece, “Proposed mine site considered sacred” and also collected two second-place awards in Continuing Coverage for stories on Stericycle and Best Series for her coverage of air quality. Penrod also collected an honorable mention for Religion and Values reporting for her piece, “New Stansbury pastor found his faith on Iraq’s desert battlefield.”

Reporter Tim Gillie received two second-place awards in General News for “Pen stroke ends Overlake lawsuit” and in Government Reporting for “Commission wants final say on future new hires.” Gillie won third place in Education Reporting for “Books may disappear from classrooms as district trends to digital” at the awards ceremony, which was held at Salt Lake’s Frida Bistro on June 18.

Sports editor Tavin Stucki received a second-place award for Sports Non-Deadline reporting for “Broken body, detoured dreams.”

Photographer Francie Aufdemorte won first place in the General Photo category for “Prison Reaction” and in Feature Photo for “Bullying.”

Photographer Sue Butterfield also took home two awards, including first place in Spot News Photo for “Kidnapping” and second place for Feature Photo.

The Transcript Bulletin also received a third-place award for Photo Essay and finished in second place for Editorial.

Transcript Bulletin alumni also collected awards for stories written in 2014.

Former reporter Lisa Christensen took first place in Criminal Justice Reporting for “Beach doesn’t recall stabbing” and second place in Humor/Lifestyle Column for “How I killed Mike Colson and the rest of the Grantsville City Council in just 2 days.” Christensen also claimed a third-place award in Spot News for “Fight leads to killing of SHS student.”

Sports columnist David Gumucio took first place in Sports Column for “Unified soccer delivers” and also took second place in the same category.
