A Tooele man charged with felony sexual abuse made his first appearance in Third District Court on Monday morning.
Terrence Boone Johnson, 21, is charged with forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony, and sexual abuse of a minor student, which was enhanced from a misdemeanor to a third-degree felony due to his position of trust, according to Tooele City Police.
Johnson was a volunteer track coach at Tooele High School and the 15-year-old victim was a member of the track team, according to a probable cause statement.
Johnson and the victim were in Johnson’s basement when the alleged abuse occurred, the statement said. The victim and Johnson kissed and Johnson allegedly touched the victim during the encounter, which occurred in May, according to the probable cause statement.
When Johnson was arrested, he admitted to police that he kissed the victim and described the touching that occurred during the incident, the statement said.
In court Monday, Judge Robert Adkins ordered Johnson’s release from the Tooele County Detention Facility once he is fitted with a GPS ankle monitor. Adkins ordered Johnson to have no contact with any females under the age of 18 and to not go within 500 feet of any school.
Johnson will next appear in court on Aug. 11 at 1:30 p.m. for a roll call hearing.
